Tinnitus

What Is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the name given to the perception of sounds heard in the ears or head that cannot be attributed to an external sound source. Tinnitus is most commonly associated with a high pitched ringing noise but can be experienced as a more mechanical, electrical or musical sound. Although tinnitus is often reported as intermittent and unobtrusive, for some people it is constant and very distressing.

It is said that approximately 10% of the adult population experience tinnitus, but only 7% of these people will seek the advice and support of a professional.

The precise cause of tinnitus is unknown but there are a number of factors which can cause perceived onset or exacerbate the effects of existing tinnitus.

  • Impacted Wax
  • Glue Ear
  • Perforation of Ear Drum
  • Noise Trauma
  • Acoustic Neuroma

Since the exact cause of tinnitus is somewhat ‘unknown’ there is no ‘cure’ for the condition. There are however a number of techniques and devices available which can help in the management of tinnitus.

We have a range of specialised assistive listening devices available to people suffering with tinnitus.
