Hearing Tests

Ear Examination

This involves the audiologist shining a light into your ears to have a look at your ear canals and ear drums. This is painless and will allow the audiologist to identify problems in the outer ear such as wax or infection.

In the event that your ears are blocked with wax or debris we offer a wax clearance service including instrumentation and micro-suction.

Adults

Hearing tests involve the measurement of a person’s sensitivity to a range of different sounds. Hearing assessment in this manor is a valuable tool in not only the diagnosis of different types of hearing loss, but can also be an indicator to other neural problems.

The typical hearing test involves a response to the presence of a sound which is presented through headphones under appropriate test conditions and usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the findings.

We offer a full diagnostic hearing test using the most up to date audiometers supplied by the world’s leading provider of hearing assessment systems. We are available for one-off hearing assessments as well as regular hearing reviews including occupational monitoring in accordance with HSE (Health and safety executive) guidelines for noise induced hearing problems.

Children (Age 4+ years)

Children’s hearing assessment can be invaluable to their social and educational development.

Whilst children are routinely assessed in NHS services at birth and again when they are approximately 4 years old (school age) the prevalence of childhood hearing impairment is said to increase up to at least the age of 9 years.

It is common for children to suffer with temporary hearing problems; over 75% of children will be afflicted with fluid congestion behind their ear drums (‘Glue Ear’) between the age of 6 months and 7 years.

Indicator’s of childhood hearing problems are:

  • Delayed/ unclear speech and language development,
  • Difficulty with reading and spelling (particularly when learning phonetics),
  • Poor concentration,
  • Regular runny nose/colds,
  • Earache/ discharging ears

(Please note that these are indicators and no diagnosis can be made without full assessment and consideration).

We offer tailored hearing assessments appropriate to the child’s age and ability. This will usually require the child to respond to the presentation of sounds through headphones.

We recommend that the middle ear function of all children is assessed with every hearing test as this will help to identify the most common causes of hearing loss in children.

Middle ear function (Impedance) test

This test measure’s the middle ear status including the mobility of the ear drum by measuring the effect of changing the air pressure in the ear canal.

This test is highly recommended where there are any concerns regarding the integrity of the middle ear.
